Introduction:
With increasing self-consciousness on local cultural identities, the term “local culture” is being frequently used in various discussions and often being related to “creativity”, with an expectation leading to development into the “industry”. However, the discussion may return to a basic question: how unique is the city we are living in? How can we describe the unique cultural characters of Hong Kong?

Let’s look into the road that Cantonese opera gone through. From being an artistic tool with revolutionary characters in mainland China, the performing art spread to Hong Kong. Under the shelter of the passive colonial cultural policies, Cantonese opera, together with bamboo scaffolding skills, dodged the Cultural Revolution and maintained their characteristics in term of the Lingnan culture. Preserved and developed, following the rapid capitalistic and urbanizing developments, the arts and cultures grew into special cultural scenes still being seen everywhere in the city. How do the special characters of Cantonese opera culture directly connect with the cultural characters of Hong Kong? How can we concretely describe the linkage in between? Can we practically integrate the traditional cultures into current trend of creative industry development?
