Scaffolding‧Viewing‧Assembling
Cultural Observations on Bamboo Scaffolding, Chinese Opera and Markets

Scaffolding‧Viewing‧Assembling
Cultural Observations on Bamboo Scaffolding, Chinese Opera and Markets
Cultural Observations on Bamboo Scaffolding, Chinese Opera and Markets
Scaffolding‧Viewing‧Assembling starts from the origin of the interesting city building landscape and bamboo scaffolding combination, looking into the unique cultural heritage and wisdoms of life of our ancestors. Moving to the Sunbeam Theatre, the only remaining private Chinese opera performance venue in Hong Kong, it is about reading and understanding the messages behind the changing modes of viewing and being viewed in local Chinese opera performances. Stepping into the markets, we are witnessing the transformation of Hong Kong traditional markets and fading of local market cultural contents. Together with over 500 valuable historical images, sketches and field photos, the book presents an authentic Hong Kong journey across eras enriched with living histories and humanistic landscapes.
After the book launch and exhibition held in Nov 2010, we have received a lot of encouragement and inspirations which gave us much energy to move on. Many thanks to receive the invitation from Director of POINTS TO LIFE BOOKS, we will arrange another exhibition of more than 40 original sketches and 60 photos. And to our great honor, Dr. Ng Fung-ping Dorothy, Mr. Oscar Ho and Dr. Chan Chak-lui will kindly be the guest speakers of three discussion sessions, to share thoughts and with the audience and explore more possibilities of local cultural development. Teachers and students are most welcome to join the guided tours leaded by us the authors. Let’s start our journey from particular angles in bamboo scaffolding, Chinese opera viewing and market cultures, and let it bring us all to more interesting and in-depth understanding and study on Hong Kong folk cultures.
We believe that continue discussions on local cultures lead to sustainable accumulation of cultural contents and development. We sincerely hope that our first step can serve as a point to assemble energy for this goal.

Sharing and Discussion Sessions As pointed out in the prologue, understanding and inheritance of local cultural identities require the support of more analysis and researches. We hope that the book not only serves as a record of local cultures, but also as a point to encourage and continue happenings of more discussions on local cultural contents. The three authors will start the discussions by sharing their personal experiences in tracing the rich local culture contents and contexts, and invite the guest speakers to share and discuss with us their views on inheritance and development of local culture studies.

Bamboo-shed Cantonese opera & School Education: from Culture Space to Learning Space Date: 29 Jan 2011 (Sat) Time: 3:30 – 5:30pm
Guest speaker: Dr. NG Fung-ping Dorothy (Member, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee; Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education, HKU)
Introduction:
Cantonese opera was officially inscribed onto the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, becoming the first item of the world intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong. The unique cultural space of local Cantonese opera, the bamboo-shed theatre, contains various cultural contents from religious ceremonies, festive activities, bamboo structures, scaffolding and binding techniques, traditional Cantonese opera performances to markets and fairs. Through pertinent teaching plans, the rich cultural elements of bamboo-shed theatre can become an interesting part of the curriculum to enrich and broaden the cultural senses of Hong Kong students.
