首屆北京國際設計三年展分主題展〈知 ,可說是全世界首次以竹設計為主題的大型展覽,應邀為是次三年展的唯一亞洲策展人,劉小康以逾一年的時間進行考察,徵集及邀請了來自歐美、亞洲國家及大中華地區共13個國家24個地區,雲集國際知名及新晉66位設計師及參展機構,展出逾200件竹設計作品、珍貴圖片及裝置。

〈知“竹”〉以“竹生活”為概念,並從文化、現代設計及科技提昇的角度對其進行探索,其中包含了對竹傳統的應用、欣賞,和現代設計從中得到的啓發,探討這既傳統又新穎的材料。同時亦深入探討竹子的未來設計對世界設計的影響。

展覽簡介

諺語有謂:“知足常樂”。“竹”的普通話發音與“足”相近,其實,知“竹”也是快樂的。竹子確實可以滿足人類生活眾多方面的需要。

竹子在西方植物學的角度被定性為木質草科,從中國人的角度看則“不剛不柔,非草非木”,與草木皆不同。全世界的竹子種類共有1250多種,其中約有100多種可用於商業開發。《康熙字典》中,竹字部首字共968字,其中竹器物字共495字;《辭海》中,常用竹器物字共223字,可見竹子的用途是多麼廣泛。

竹子在中國人及至亞洲人的設計角度裏,是從文化層次及生活情感出發,以竹喻人。相對西方的角度,竹子是一種環保簡約的物料,反映一種回歸大自然的生活態度。彼此出發點有異,形成有趣的探討議題,比較雙方的竹設計,並從當中找到共識,從中找到竹子在今天的意義。
是次展覽的策劃主要從兩點切入:竹子為象徵的文化精神和竹子在生活裏的應用。展覽展示的是一次世界性的竹子考察及最具前瞻性的竹設計展覽,將關注中國、亞洲乃至全世界的竹設計,分為五個部分呈現:
1、意:文化之竹
2、藝:工藝之竹
3、器:日用之竹
4、境:建築之竹
5、悟:創新之竹
現時世界流行的LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability),是一種生活方法,又可說是慢生活;將來,又會否有一種“竹生活”呢?

The sub-theme exhibition of First Beijing International Design Triennial (BIDT) “Rethinking Bamboo” is probably the first large-scale exhibition in the world which is themed on bamboo designs. Freeman Lau, the only Asian curator invited by BIDT, has spent over one year in bamboo-related research and has invited world-famous design masters as well as novices from a total of 13 countries and 24 regions all over the world in joining BIDT.

“Rethinking Bamboo” has invited 66 designers and participating organisations from Asia, Europe and the United States in exhibiting over 200 precious pieces of bamboo design works, images and installations. The exhibition takes bamboo life as a concept and explores it through cultural, modern design and technological advancement perspectives which include applications and appreciation of and inspiration from traditional bamboo craftsmanship.


EXHIBITION INTRODUCTION

As the saying goes, to achieve a state of contentment (zhi zu) is to truly know one’s own happiness. The pronunciation of Bamboo (zhu) in Mandarin translates as enough (zu). Indeed, a better understanding of this ubiquitous plant brings its own rewards. Bamboo can indeed bring fulfillment to the many needs in human life.

In Western botanical studies, bamboo is classified as a Poaceae, a member of the true grass family. However, from a Chinese perspective, it is “neither hard nor soft neither grass nor wood”. It is different from both. There are around 1,250 varieties of bamboo found in different parts of the world, with more than a hundred suitable for commercial development purposes. In Kang Xi Dictionary, there are a total of 968 Chinese characters with “bamboo” as a radical and 495 of these characters denote a bamboo utensil; and in Ci Hai, a dictionary especially for combinations of single Chinese characters, 223 entries of commonly-used bamboo utensils are found. The large amount of Chinese words relating to bamboo indicates its wide-ranging applications.

From a Western perspective, bamboo is an environmentally friendly and natural material, pointing to an organic way of life. The East, on the contrary, emphasizes its cultural and sentimental values as a metaphor for personhood. These contrasting approaches form the basis of an interesting dialogue. Through comparing bamboo designs from the East and the West and henceforth reaching a consensus of the two, the exhibition aims to investigate the role and significance of bamboo in contemporary society.

“Rethinking Bamboo” is curated from two main points of departure: first, bamboo as an embodiment of the spirit of Chinese culture and second, the application of bamboo in everyday life. This current exhibition features a worldwide research and study on bamboo and the most forward-thinking bamboo design, showcasing works from all over the world under five themes:

1. Metaphor – Bamboo in Chinese Culture
2. Craftsmanship – Bamboo Craftsmanship
3. Utensils – Bamboo in Daily Life
4. Space – Bamboo and Architecture
5. Rethinking – Bamboo Innovation

Today, LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability), a new way of living also is regarded as slow living is gaining its popularity. Would we see in the future, the emergence of a “Bamboo Life”?
